Charles Darwin’s journey aboard the H.M.S. Beagle lasted five years and covered more than 40,000 miles. Most of the exploration consisted of a survey of the South American coast and nearby islands. Probably the best-known observations made by Darwin during the voyage were of the Galapagos finch population. He recorded extensive notes on the life forms he observed there and began to question previous assumptions about the origin of the species.
Today, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, established on Santa Cruz Island for the primary purpose of observing and preserving the natural environment of the archipelago. The station acquaints visitors with the island’s unique flora and fauna: numerous plants, nearly all of the resident birds and all the reptiles. In 1959, a hundred years after the publication of the "Origin of the Species," the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands was created under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The Foundation conducts scientific research necessary to preserve those unique ecosystems that are humanity’s natural heritage.
The fearless attitude of both birds and animals towards man makes the Galapagos Islands a paradise for naturalists, ornithologists, ecologists, conservationists, scientists and photographers.
To cruise in luxury and comfort, we have selected the M/Y Letty, a deluxe yacht with a capacity of 20 passengers and staffed by a crew of 10, including a licensed ecologist. The yacht features outside cabins with lower berths, a spacious dining room, comfortable lounge, a solarium, and a reading/games room. The size of the yacht enables her to moor in coves not otherwise accessible to larger boats.
A visit of Quito presents the culture of the beautiful and stable country of Ecuador.
